Dicorate ER 750 mg contains the active ingredient Divalproex sodium, which is clinically tested for the following indications:
- Epilepsy
Dicorate ER 750 mg is used as monotherapy and combination treatment for adults and pediatric patients of the age of ten years with complex partial seizures that occur separately or with other types of seizures. Dicorate delayed-release medicine is used as monotherapy and in combination therapy to treat simple and complex absence seizures in adult patients and children aged 10 years or older and adjunctively in adults and kids aged 10 years or older with multiple seizure types, including absence seizures. Here, simple absence denotes loss of consciousness accompanied by certain generalized epileptic discharges.
- Mania
Dicorate ER 750 mg is a prescription medicine used for treating manic or mixed episodes related to bipolar disorder, with or without psychotic traits. A manic episode is a period of abnormally and persistently elevated and irritable mood. Symptoms of mania include motor hyperactivity, pressured speech, reduced need for sleep, poor judgment, flight of ideas, and possible hostility. On the other hand, a mixed episode is defined by the criteria for a manic episode in combination with those for a major depressive episode (loss of interest in almost all activities and depressed mood). The effectiveness of Dicorate ER for long-term use in mania (lasting more than three weeks) has not been demonstrated in clinical trials. Therefore, long-term treatment must be reevaluated to ensure the patient's long-term risk-benefit balance in the medicine.
- Migraine
Dicorate ER is used for the prevention of migraine headaches. No evidence shows the effectiveness of this medicine in the acute treatment of migraine headaches.
Dicorate ER 750 mg must be started and supervised by a specialist with experience in managing mania. In patients with manic depression, epilepsy, or migraine, the Dicorate extended-release tablet must not be used by pregnant women. Use of Divalproex is contraindicated in female children and women of reproductive potential unless other treatment options fail to work or are not tolerated.
If you take Dicorate ER 750 mg at the time of pregnancy for any medical condition, you may put your baby at high risk of developing serious birth defects affecting the spinal cord and brain. These defects typically occur during the first month of pregnancy. Other birth defects affecting the structure of the head, heart, arms, legs, and urethra on the bottom of the penis can also occur. Reduced hearing or hearing loss can also happen. These birth defects may also occur even in kids born to women who are not taking any medicine and do not carry any other risk factors. Pregnant women must not take Divalproex to prevent migraine headaches. Women of reproductive potential should speak to their healthcare specialist about using other possible options of treatment instead of Dicorate ER. If it is important to use Divalproex sodium, using an effective contraceptive is necessary. Inform your healthcare specialist if you become pregnant while taking this mood stabilizer.
Avoid alcohol consumption during the treatment. Divalproex and alcohol can affect each other, causing adverse effects such as dizziness and sleepiness.
