Bimatoprost is the active pharmaceutical component present in glaucoma medications. It is useful in treating high pressure inside the eye due to open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Reducing elevated pressure in the eye can help prevent total vision loss. Its regular use in the form of eye drops regulates the flow of aqueous humor within the eye to maintain normal pressure.

Bimatoprost is also used to stimulate the growth of eyelashes. It is a prescription eye drop that makes them thicker, darker, and longer.

The active ingredient, Bimatoprost

Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin drug. It increases the amount of aqueous humor fluid drains out of the eye, lowering intraocular eye pressure (IOP).

Bimatoprost lowers the IOP by mimicking the action of naturally occurring prostaglandin (natural body chemicals found in the body). Prostaglandins are known to increase the eye fluid drainage out of the eye and maintain the proper pressure within the eye.

Uses of Bimatoprost

Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution is supplied in a container for topical use.

To treat glaucoma, apply the solution to the affected eye once daily in the evening, as directed by your ophthalmologist.

While taking the dose, tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down your lower eyelid. Hold the bottle’s tip or the dropper over your affected eye and place one drop into the eye. After dropping the solution in the eye, gradually look downward and gently close your eyes for at least one minute. To avoid draining the solution, one can put a finger on the corner of the eye that is close to the nose and gently apply pressure. You are not allowed to blink and rub the eye after dropping the formulation into your eye. Repeat these steps for another eye if it is affected by glaucoma.

It is necessary to replace the dropper cap after each application and make sure that you close it tightly. If you are using other eye drops or ointments, you must wait at least 5 minutes before applying other eye formulations. Also, use the eye drops before eye ointments so that the eye drops can quickly enter the eye without any interference.

For the growth of eyelashes– Apply Bimatoprost once daily at night. Before applying the solution, wash your face and remove makeup. Also, take out your contact lenses, if any. Place one drop on the applicator that comes along with the solution and draw a line along the base of the upper eyelashes. Do not apply on the lower lash line. Immediately blot the excess solution with a tissue to avoid unwanted hair growth. Dispose of the applicator and use a new sterile applicator to minimize the chances of contamination.

Important things to remember

Do not use the solution more often because it will not work. Wash your hands before and after applying the solution. To avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of the bottle or don’t allow the tip to touch your eye or any other surface. Bimatoprost eye drops contain a preservative that may stain contact lenses. So, it is necessary to remove contact lenses before applying the solution.  A patient must wait at least fifteen minutes before putting your contact lenses back in.

Use the Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution regularly to get the maximum results. Remember to take the medication every day at the same time. Continue using the formulation even if you feel well. Most people don’t have symptoms associated with glaucoma or high pressure within the eye.
