Sumatriptan is a group of medication that is used in treating migraines. It helps to get relief from a headache, pain, and other symptoms of migraines such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light/sound. Prompt treatment of a migraine can help you back to live your normal daily routine and decreases your need of other pain medications. Sumatriptan belongs to a drugs category called ‘triptans’ that is used to treat migraines. It relieves pain instantly by affecting specific nerves in the brain. Sumatriptan does not claim to prevent future migraines attacks or lessen the chances of it.
How to use
Before taking Sumatriptan, it is always advisable to read the thorough instruction and information given on the Patient Information Leaflet. If you are not sure about the dosage, ask your doctor or pharmacist. You can take Sumatriptan 100 tablets by mouth with or without food as directed by your health provider, at the first sign of a migraine. The dosage can be based on your health condition and the way you respond to treatment. If you don’t notice any improvement in your symptoms, stop taking more doses of Sumatriptan before consulting your doctor. If your symptoms are relieved partly only, and your headache comes back, you can take another dose in two hours. But, make sure that you don’t take more than 200 milligrams in a period of 24-hours. If you have any heart problem or are at higher risk, your health provider can suggest you for a heart exam before prescribing Sumatriptan. Your doctor may also suggest you take your first dose of this medication in his assistance so that he can monitor you for serious side effects. Consult your doctor or health provider for more details about the side effects of this medication. An overdose of this medication wouldn’t provide you faster results, but can sometimes lead to worsening of a headache or rebound a headache. Therefore, avoid taking this medication more often or for longer than prescribed. Contact your doctor in conditions like the medication is not working as well, you need to take this medication more often, or if you have more frequent headaches. Your doctor may change your medication or add some another medication to help prevent headaches.
Precautions:
Before taking Sumatriptan, tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical condition. Also, discuss if you are allergic to any content of this medication or if you have any other allergies. However, Sumatriptan 100mg may contain some inactive ingredients which can cause allergic reactions or other health problems. Talk to your doctor or Health provider for more details. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical histories such as blood circulation problems, certain types of headaches, heart problems, liver disease, seizure, or stroke. Certain conditions can lead to an increased risk for heart problems. Contact your doctor if you have any of these medical problems:
- Family history of heart disease
- High cholesterol
- Overweight
- Smoker
- Diabetes
- Age more than 40 years (men)
- Postmenopausal (women)
While taking this drug, you may feel dizzy or drowsy. Avoid driving, using machinery, or any activity that requires alertness until you feel you can perform such activities safely. Also, avoid smoking or taking alcoholic beverages. The risk of liver disease, heart disease or high blood pressure increases with age. Older adults can be more sensitive to the side effects of Sumatriptan, especially in case of increased blood pressure and heart problems. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication in detail with your healthcare provider.
