Cardivas CR 20 mg
Cardivas CR 20 mg is indicated for the chronic therapy of heart failure, hypertension, and left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction (MI) in clinically stable patients. It belongs to a group of medicines known as beta-blockers, which work by relaxing constricted blood vessels and slowing the rate of heartbeat.
- Congestive heart failure - Cardivas is indicated for treating mild to severe heart failure of ischemic or cardiomyopathic origin, usually in addition to diuretics or ACE inhibitors to increase survival and reduce the risk of hospitalization.
- Hypertension - Cardivas helps in the management of essential hypertension. It can be used alone or with other antihypertensive agents, especially thiazide diuretics.
- Left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction - Carvedilol causes a significant reduction in cardiovascular mortality in clinically stable patients who have survived the acute phase of myocardial infarction and have a left ventricular ejection fraction.
How to use Cardivas CR 20 mg?
Cardivas CR 20 is an oral medication in a controlled release form once daily. The dose is individualized based on blood pressure and heart rate response. However, if used in heart failure, the dose is adjusted as directed by guideline-directed management and therapy.
Take Cardivas exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Your doctor will tell you how many tablets to take each day. Your doctor will decide the best dose for you to treat high blood pressure, angina, and heart failure.
The medicine is available in the form of an extended-release tablet. Swallow the tablet with a glass full of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
What are the Precautions (warning, allergy, things to remember)?
Absolute contraindications for using Cardivas include severe hypotension, sick sinus syndrome, second or third-degree AV block, severe bradycardia in the absence of a functional pacemaker, severe decompensated heart failure, and a history of a serious hypersensitivity reaction. Clinicians should use caution in patients with asthma or reactive airway disease history. It is recommended to avoid the use in patients with active wheezing due to its beta-blocking properties.
Patients taking Cardivas CR 20 mg should be advised of the following:
- Without a doctor's advice, they should not discontinue using Cardivas Cr 20 mg.
- They should take the controlled release tablet
- They may experience a drop in blood pressure when standing, resulting in dizziness and rarely fainting. Patients should immediately lie down when the symptoms of low blood pressure occur.
- Those who wear contact lenses may experience decreased lacrimation.
- They should consult a doctor if they experience dizziness or faintness in case the dose should be adjusted.
- Diabetic patients should inform their parents of any changes in blood sugar levels to their doctor.
What are the Side effects of Cardivas CR 20 mg?
Cardivas CR 20 mg is a relatively well-tolerated drug with fewer frequent side effects than other beta blockers, and the side effects are dose-related. The most common side effect of Carvedilol is unwanted, excessive hypotension secondary to its vasodilating properties. These include fatigue, lightheadedness, headaches, and dizziness. Other side effects are associated with beta-clocking properties, including bronchospasm, asthenia, malaise, and dyspnoea—additional symptoms of headache, weight gain, diarrhoea, impotence, depression, and renal impairment.
