Deriva MS aqueous gel .1% is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris. It contains the active ingredient adapalene .1% to treat mild to moderate acne affecting your face, chest, and back. Deriva MS performs a dual function. First, it opens blocked oil glands and prevents skin bumps from forming. Second, it kills acne-causing bacteria and helps reduce inflammation. It takes up to 4 to 8 weeks to see a significant improvement, and you should see full results as you continue to use this medication.
Precautions Deriva MS Aqueous Gel 0.1%
- Patients hypersensitive to adapalene, or any other ingredient in the medicine should not use Deriva MS aqueous gel. Also, it should not be applied to areas of skin affected with seborrhoeic dermatitis or eczema.
- This gel is for external use only. It is not for ophthalmic use or vaginal use. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, ears, mucous membranes, vagina, or open wounds. In case of accidental contact, rinse thoroughly with running water.
- If a skin reaction suggests an allergic reaction to adapalene or any other component of the topical formulation, the topical gel must be discontinued.
- Concomitant use of acne medication, especially peeling or abrasive agents, is not recommended because of the possible irritant effect that may occur.
- Coadministration of other potentially irritating topical agents such as medicated soaps, cosmetics with a strong drying effect, products with high alcohol levels, astringents, and lime.
- Adapalene should not be applied to abraded skin, sunburned skin, or skin affected with eczema. Retinoids, waxing, chemical depilatories, and other products for hair removal should be avoided on the skin treated with Deriva MS gel.
- The topical gel may bleach your hair or your clothes. Be cautious when applying it near the hairline.
- Non-comedogenic cosmetics are usually recommended.
- Certain symptoms, such as burning, scaling, dryness, or erythema, are associated with applying adapalene. These treatment-related unwanted effects usually appear during the first four weeks of treatment. They are mild to moderate and usually lessen as your skin adjusts to the medicine regularly. Patients may be advised to use a moisturizer to reduce excessive dryness and peeling caused by this topical medicine. Sometimes, your dermatologist may advise you to use this medicine less frequently or temporarily discontinue treatment until these symptoms resolve.
- Exposure to excessive sunlight and artificial sources of sunlight (sunlamps and tanning booths) should be avoided while receiving the topical formulation. Moreover, using effective sunscreen and protective clothing may help you protect yourself from sun rays. In case of sunburn, allow your skin to heal before Deriva MS aqueous application. Weather changes, including cold winds, may also irritate your skin if you use a retinoid formulation.
- Topical retinoid is contraindicated in pregnant females. It is not known whether the product is excreted in human milk. However, because many medications are excreted in breast milk, extra care should be taken when a nursing mother is using it. Avoid applying the gel on your breast area to avoid exposure to infants, especially before breastfeeding.
Side effects of Deriva MS Aqueous Gel 0.1%
Do not lose hope if this formulation causes dryness, redness, peeling, and burning sensation when initiating the treatment for 2 to 4 weeks. If it happens, understand that your skin is preparing to adjust to adapalene’s action of opening clogged pores. If these effects persist or become bothersome, speak to your dermatologist. You may be advised to use a good quality moisturizer to reduce dryness and peeling.
Usage instructions of Deriva MS Aqueous Gel 0.1%
First, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing your face with a towel. Adapalene gel comes in a pump bottle; dispense a dose of medicine on your finger and apply it evenly on the affected skin area. Usually, a pea-sized amount is enough to cover the affected skin area. If skin irritation occurs or worsens during the treatment, discontinue treatment. If you consult a dermatologist, you may be advised to wait until the irritation resolves and then asked to restart treatment after a few days, following the daily schedule.
