Mesacol OD 1200mg
Mesacol for oral administration is an extended-release formulation of mesalamine, an anti-inflammatory agent for gastrointestinal use. It treats and maintains remission in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. This medicine is delivered in the intestine due to the controlled release tablet. It contains the active ingredient Mesalazine, which prevents or blocks the production of certain substances responsible for causing inflammation. Mesalazine helps to reduce symptoms such as bleeding, diarrhea, and stomach pain by reducing the inflammation in the bowel.
How to use (infographics and instructions)
The dose will depend on what you are being treated for; therefore, using the medicines only as your healthcare provider prescribes is important. In general, Mesacol may be taken with food or an empty stomach. Swallow the tablet with a glass full of water, preferably before your meals. Do not break, cut, or chew the medicine. It is best to take it at a fixed time for optimal results, and you should not consume more than the health care specialist prescribes. Drink an adequate amount of fluids. You should keep on taking the medicine as prescribed. If you stop treatment too early, your symptoms may return, and your condition may worsen. The safety and effectiveness of this medicine in pediatric patients have not been established.
Precautions (warning, allergy, things to remember)
Mesacol is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to salicylates, aminosalicylates, or any components of this medicine. Avoid using the medicine if you have experienced an allergic reaction while taking sulfasalazine. Inform your healthcare provider of liver problems, kidney diseases, asthma, or heart problems. You may develop kidney stones while on treatment with this medication. Therefore, you should drink plenty of water.
Mesacol tablets should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if it is required. It is not recommended for use in children and adolescents aged below 18 years of age. It is advised to use it with caution in elderly patients.
You need to be cautious while simultaneously taking this medication, along with medicines like Azathioprine, thioguanine (used in cancer treatment), and 6-mercaptopurine. Mesalazine, when combined with blood thinners like warfarin, may reduce the effect of warfarin.
Mesacol 1200 mg passes into the breast milk. When prescribed, watch out for symptoms like diarrhea; if your child develops it immediately, discontinue breastfeeding and speak to your doctor.
