Panlipase capsule is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of pancreatic insufficiency. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs when your pancreas doesn’t make enough digestive enzymes. It is available in the form of capsules for oral administration. These capsules are pancreatic enzyme supplements used by people whose bodies do not make enough enzymes to digest their food, such as patients with cystic fibrosis, swelling of the pancreas that lasts a long time, removal of some or all of the pancreas, or other conditions. Panlipase may help your body use food proteins, fats, and sugars.     

The capsules contain a mixture of natural enzymes, including lipases, proteases, and amylases used to digest food. The enzymes are extracted from pig pancreas glands. The combination of enzymes works by digesting food as it passes through the gut. So, you must take Panlipase simultaneously as eating a meal or snack. This will allow the enzymes to mix thoroughly with the food.   

People with pancreatic exocrine insufficiency often suffer from symptoms of diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating, and steatorrhea (foul fatty stools which float in the toilet).     

How to use Panlipase?

Treatment should be initiated at the lowest recommended dose and gradually increased. The dosage should be individualized based on clinical symptoms, the degree of steatorrhea present, and the fat content of the diet. Panlipase should be taken during meals or snacks with sufficient fluid.

You should take your medicine until your doctor tells you to stop. Many patients will need to take pancreatic enzyme supplements for the rest of their lives. The medicine is available in capsules and should be swallowed whole.

For infants or patients unable to swallow intact capsules, the contents may be administered without crushing or chewing, followed by fluid to ensure complete ingestion; you can open the capsules and mix the granules with an acidic liquid or soft food. Swallow the mixture right away, without chewing. Drink plenty of water during and after the treatment. Mixing the medicine with non-acidic food or liquid, crushing or chewing the capsules may irritate your mouth or change how Panlipase works in your body. Please do not hold the capsule or its content in your mouth. If you take too much of this medicine, you should drink plenty of water and see your doctor immediately.  

What are the Precautions (warning, allergy, things to remember)?

Do not take Panlipase if you are allergic to pork, pig product, or other ingredients. If the above condition applies to you, do not take Pancrelipase. Speak to your dietician again.    

Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Please let your doctor know if you think you should not take Pancrelipase for any other reason.

What are the Side effects of Panlipase?

Common side effects include stomach pain, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, and feeling or being sick. During use, some patients have also experienced the following:

• Allergic reactions which may be severe
• Itching with or without a rash
• Severe or long-lasting abdominal pain

Some people have had high uric acid levels in their bloodstream and urine at extremely high doses.
