Seretide Diskus 250 mcg/50 mcg is a combination medicine containing fluticasone propionate and salmeterol to reduce lung inflammation, leading to breathing problems. It is not used to relieve sudden breathing issues and will not be used as a recuse inhaler. Seretide Diskus is used to treat asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as follows:

Asthma

Seretide Diskus is given to patients whose asthma is inadequately controlled with a long-term asthma medicine such as an inhaled corticosteroid alone or whose asthma is so severe that it requires a combination treatment of both an inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta 2 agonists. Unless your healthcare provider advises, this combination medicine should not be your first asthma medicine. It is only given if a regular inhaled corticosteroid medicine and a fast-acting reliever medicine such as salbutamol do not adequately help you breathe. Fluticasone/Salmeterol Diskus helps prevent episodes of shortness of breath and wheezing due to asthma.

COPD

COPD is a lung disease in which the airways permanently narrow, leading to breathing troubles. In many patients, this narrowing of the airways could be due to long-term smoking. Seretide Diskus is prescribed for the long-term control of symptoms due to COPD and to prevent wheezing in adults dealing with COPD.

Fluticasone is an inhaled corticosteroid used to treat breathing problems because of its anti-inflammatory action. They also help to reduce irritation and swelling in the air passages and lungs, thus easing breathing problems. Salmeterol, a long-acting beta 2 agonist, acts by causing relaxation of muscles in the walls of airways in the lungs. This allows the opening of airways and makes it easier for the air to get in and out of the lungs. The effects of salmeterol last for at least twelve hours. When you take an inhaled corticosteroid regularly, it helps the airways to remain open. Corticosteroids are the medications that help to prevent asthma attacks. Regularly taking these two medicines will help control your breathing problems.

Seretide Diskus does not quickly relieve a sudden attack of wheezing and shortness of breath due to asthma or COPD. A fast-acting 'reliever' medicine like salbutamol should be used by patients who experience sudden wheezing and breathlessness attacks.

Seretide Diskus is contraindicated if you have a history of allergic reactions to Fluticasone propionate, salmeterol, or the medicine's other ingredients. It should not be given to patients with a history of irregular heartbeats or untreated fungal, bacterial, or tuberculosis infection.

Seretide Diskus can contribute to serious side effects, including:

  • Fungal infections in your mouth or throat. To reduce these side effects, wash your mouth with water after using Seretide diskus; do not swallow the water. This helps to reduce your chance of getting thrush.
  • Individuals suffering from COPD are at high risk of developing pneumonia. The use of Seretide diskus may increase the chance of getting pneumonia.
  • Reduced adrenal function
  • Weakened immune system and elevated risk of developing infections
  • Sudden breathing issues developed after inhaling your medicine
  • Serious allergic reaction. Seek immediate medical help if you develop signs of an allergic reaction, including  rash, hives, breathing problems, swelling of face, mouth and tongue
  • Effects on the nervous system occur. The symptoms include tremors and nervousness
  • Effects on the heart. The symptoms include increased blood pressure, chest pain, a fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Slowed growth in children
  • Bone weakening or thinning (Osteoporosis)

Common side effects are throat infection, upper respiratory tract infection, headache, viral respiratory infection, muscle and bone pain, hoarseness, and voice changes.

Use Seretide diskus exactly as instructed by your healthcare provider. Make sure you do not use it more often than prescribed. One inhalation of Seretide diskus is used twice daily. Use it daily, about twelve hours apart. In case you miss a dose, skip it. Take the next dose at your usual time. Avoid taking two doses at one time. Avoid too much use of this medicine; seek immediate medical help if you have unusual symptoms associated with excessive use of Seretide diskus. These unusual symptoms include chest pain, increased heart rate, shakiness, and shortness of breath.

Do not use other medicines containing long-acting beta 2 agonists for any reason. Discuss with your healthcare provider if any other medicine containing long-acting beta 2 agonists is used.

Do not discontinue treatment even if you feel better unless your healthcare specialist advises. As mentioned in the usage section, Seretide Diskus is not applicable for relieving sudden breathing problems. Make sure you carry a rescue inhaler with you to get rid of sudden asthma attacks. Rinse your mouth with water after each dose of Fluticasone/salmeterol diskus. This helps to lessen the chance of getting a yeast infection in your throat and mouth
