Tenof EM 300/200 mg
Tenof EM tablet contains 200 mg emtricitabine and 300 mg tenofovir for the treatment of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults. It is a fixed-dose combination medicine approved for treating HIV-infected adults. Combining two medicines helps control HIV infection so your immune system can work better. Tenofovir and Emtricitabine work together to decrease the amount of HIV in the body, thus lowering your risk of getting HIV-related complications. The medicine also prevents HIV infection in some people at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex and heterosexual couples, where one partner has HIV-1, and the other does not. Hence, it should be used with safer sex practices at all times.
When used with other medicines, Tenof EM reduces the amount of HIV in your blood and increases the number of cells that help fight off other infections. Reducing the viral load and increasing the number of CD4+ (T) cells in your bloodstream improves your immune system. This causes a significant reduction in the risk of deaths or infections that can develop when you have a weak immune system.
This antiviral medication does not cure HIV infection or AIDS. If you have HIV, you must continue to take HIV medications to control the multiplication of the virus in your body and decrease related complications.
How to use
The doctor may prescribe it alone or in combination with other HIV medications. You must take one Tenof EM 300/200 mg tablet orally daily. Follow the instructions carefully and ask your doctor to explain anything you do not understand, including the dosing regimen. Do not consider treatment discontinuation unless instructed. You may be at higher risk of becoming infected with HIV if you miss a dose; therefore, it is recommended to take the HIV drug daily as directed by the doctor. Continue your normal diet unless your doctor instructs you otherwise.
Precautions
Before taking TenoF EM, let your doctor know the following:
- If you are allergic to Tenofovir, and Emtricitabine or have other allergies.
- Mention all medications you have been using, including herbal and vitamin supplements. You may get side effects if drug interaction occurs. In drug interaction, your doctor may need to change your medication doses and monitor you for side effects. Avoid taking Tenof EM if you also take other medicines containing Tenofovir, Emtricitabine, lamivudine, and adefovir.
- If you have hepatitis B virus infection, kidney problems/receive kidney dialysis, bone problems, or other medical conditions.
- Your pregnancy status, if you are pregnant or planning to conceive. Also, if you are breastfeeding, do not breastfeed if you take Tenof EM. Tenofovir or Emtricitabine may pass to your baby.
Side effects
You may experience side effects while taking Tenof EM. These include headaches, upset stomach, vomiting, and loss of appetite. These side effects usually disappear during the first month of starting the treatment. Tell your doctor if these symptoms become severe or persist for longer.
