Xafinact 100 mg

Xafinact 100 mg is indicated as adjunctive treatment to levodopa/carbidopa in patients with Parkinson’s disease experiencing off episodes. It contains the active ingredient safinamide, which belongs to a class of medication known as monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitor. It is not known if this medication is effective in treating Parkinson’s when used as a single medicine.

How to use (infographics and instructions) 

The treatment usually starts with 50 mg orally once daily at the same time of the day; after two weeks, the regular dosage may increase to 100 mg once a day, based on individual requirements and tolerability. Take this medication exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it. You can take the medication before or after consuming food.  

Precautions (warning, allergy, things to remember)

Xafinact is contraindicated in patients with:

Concomitant use of the following medications:

  • Other monoamine oxidase inhibitors or other medications that are potent inhibitors of monoamine oxidase, for example, linezolid.
  • Opioid drugs such as meperidine, tramadol, and related derivatives, antidepressants, cyclobenzaprine, amphetamine, methylphenidate, st. John Wort
  • Dextromethorphan

Xafinact should not be given to patients with a history of hypersensitivity to safinamide and severe hepatic impairment. 

Let your health care provider know  before  taking safinamide as it may:

  • Cause or worsen hypertension
  • Cause serotonin syndrome when used with MAO inhibitors, opioid medications, or antidepressants
  • Cause falling asleep during activities of daily living
  • Cause or worsening of dyskinesia; consider levodopa dose reduction
  • Cause problems with compulsive behaviors
  • Cause hallucinations and psychotic behavior
  • Cause withdrawal emergent hyperpyrexia and confusion

Avoid certain foods and beverages high in tyramine, such as fermented, aged, cured, smoked, and pickled. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform other dangerous activities until you know how Xafinact affects you. It is not known if safinamide is safe and effective in children.

Side effects of Xafinact 100 mg

The most common side effects of Xafinact 100 mg are falls, nausea, dyskinesia, and insomnia. The medicine may cause serious side effects as well. These include high blood pressure,   serotonin syndrome, falling asleep during normal activities, uncontrolled sudden movement,   hallucinations, unusual urges, and problems with the retina in your eye.
