Xafinact 50mg
Xafinact 50 mg is a prescription treatment for adult patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease as an add-on therapy to a stable dose of levodopa. It contains the active ingredient safinamide, which increases dopamine levels in the brain. Dopamine is a chemical substance that helps control movement and is present in reduced amounts in the brains of patients with Parkinson's.
How to use (infographics and instructions)
Treatment with Xafinact should be started at 50 mg per day. This daily dose may be increased to 100 mg per day based on individual requirements. For oral use, Xafinact should be taken with water. Safinamide may be taken before or after consuming food. If you miss a dose, be sure to take the next dose at the usual time the next day. No dose adjustment is required for elderly patients. Use of s safinamide in patients over 75 years of age is limited.
Precautions (warning, allergy, things to remember)
Xafinact use in patients with severe hepatic impairment is contraindicated. No dose adjustment is required in patients with mild hepatic impairment. A lower dose of 50 mg per day is recommended for patients with moderate liver insufficiency. If a patient progresses from severe liver insufficiency, Xafinact should be stopped.
The medicine is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the ingredients in the medicine. It should not be given to patients with retinal degeneration, albinism, inherited retinopathy, or severe progressive diabetic retinopathy. Safinamide should not be used with other monoamine oxidase inhibitors and pethidine. Do not take this medicine if you have an eye condition that might put you at risk of potential damage to your retina.
The medicine should not be given to women of childbearing potential until adequate contraception is taken. A risk for the breastfed child can't be excluded. This medication should not be used during breastfeeding.
Dizziness may occur during Xafinact treatment; therefore, patients should be cautioned about using hazardous machines, including motor vehicles, until they are reasonably certain that the medication does not affect them adversely.
Side effects of Xafinact 50 mg
Common side effects of Xafinact 50 mg are feeling sleepy, headache, difficulty in performing voluntary movements, headache, dizziness, worsening of Parkinson's disease, nausea, falling, fall in blood pressure when rising to a standing position, and clouding of the lens of the eye.
